I’m No Superstar

I’m No Superstar is a blog for people like me who want to make a difference in the world but know they aren’t activists. Each post contains a social action idea that most of us could do, a book that’s worth reading, or a link to a website that offers other ideas. Oh, and it’s all introduced by a sometimes quirky story from my life.

In My Next Life I’m Living Near Family

I wrote this blog post a week before Christmas. I merely had to add photos in the morning and press publish. Instead my reliable Mac crashed, and I lost a day trying to get it up and running (shout out to the Apple phone support, which worked with me for more than an hour, and

Waiting or . . . Not

We’re often instructed that Advent is the season of waiting. Waiting for the Christ child. Waiting for the Kingdom of God. I realized the other day that this Advent I didn’t feel at all like I was waiting for anything. Not spiritually, despite the Advent readings in my book of Common Prayer. Not even in

Audacious Generosity

“How are they doing?” the man whispered to me in a quiet corner. I knew who he meant. He was asking about someone in my extended family who is facing some severe health issues that are affecting their quality of life. “They’re doing okay. Thanks for asking.” I so appreciated his concern for them. “But

Creating Space for God: Review of GodSpace by Keri Wyatt Kent

“The way I found God space—sacred moments in which we encounter the holy—was to begin to see all of my life as lived in space of God.” This is the premise of Keri Wyatt Kent’s latest book GodSpace: that we open ourselves up for more God moments when we realize he is all around us in

Of Eden and Reality

Mt. Gretna is one of my favorite places to walk. This idyllic summer retreat is chock-full of quaint, 100-year-old cottages featuring wraparound porches, decorative flourishes and well-chosen names. Whimsy abounds. It’s abundant shade makes it a safe place for me to walk since I am allergic to the sun. And its hillside location provides a

All Saints—Living Our Unity

A few weeks back I won a pair of tickets to see the All Saints movie. Based on a true story, the movie tells the story of a soon-to-close church that is saved by an influx of refugees. I hope you had the chance to see it while it was in a theater near you

What Pit Are You In?—A book review

When I began speaking, I set some parameters for myself. I wanted to be thoroughly biblical, reflecting a depth of study, and to share Bible knowledge as well as practical application. Oh, and I wanted to be funny. Yeah, basically I wanted to be Beth Moore. (Well, minus the girly girl look and the Texas

Charlottesville, Gerrymandering and Me

Gerrymandering. Weird word. In 1812, Governor Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts signed a law that changed the state voting districts to benefit his political party (his party was the Democratic-Republican Party, kind of ironic!). One of the districts ended up looking like a salamander. Combine the governor’s name with that of the amphibian and, voila, “gerrymander.”

The Wonder of It All

I am a wonderer. Not a wanderer, although I like to wander too. A wonderer—someone who wonders about everything.  I wonder why policies at work are what they are. I wonder why she paired that top with those pants. I wonder how every sunset can be different every day. I wonder why gerrymandering is called
