Still Learning the Lesson

Hallmark has a magazine. I somehow ended up subscribed to it for free. I assumed it would be mostly worthless ads for Hallmark products, maybe with some sappy stories that would make me tear up like their commercials do (knowing it's sappy doesn't keep it from getting to my tear ducts).

Actually it's a magazine worth paging through. And in a few issues I was thrilled to find a section called, "Moment," which features drawings/writings by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Amy wrote the book Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life, a quick and quirky read that I shared with lots of friends. Finding her again in Hallmark magazine was like running into an old friend.

One Amy cartoon really struck me. It's called "One Word, Four Syllables," and you can view it here. Go check it out now. I'll wait. Otherwise the rest of this blog will make little sense.

So her key is to see the big picture of what we need, and what we need is moderation. Les has lost a lot of weight (me, not so much; actually, not any), and he's really practicing moderation in what he eats. I mentioned last week that we are trying to conserve our resources and save money; that, too, is a form of moderation.

What if everyone in America practiced moderation in consumption? Might we go from being the 5 percent of the population that is consuming 30 percent of the world's resources (www.ecofuture.org/pk/pkar9506.html)? Maybe. Maybe we could even practice that childhood method for dividing up bags of candy—"One for you, one for me . . ."—and share what we have with others. What behavior can you moderate today, and how can doing so allow you to help someone else? God says that "it is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35). It may even resemble one of those Hallmark moments. And if you tell me about it, I may even tear up.
